LEARNING OBJECTIVES AND GOALS

1. Understand, review and apply in clinical practice the pathophysiology of vascular biology, vascular aging, hypertension, dyslipidemia and cardiovascular risk factors and testing

2. Understand, review and apply to patient care nutrition, nutritional supplements, exercise and weight management in the treatment of hypertension, dyslipidemia and vascular disease

3. Understand, review and discuss the clinical presentation and cardiovascular relationships of hypertension, dyslipidemia, coronary heart disease and CVD.

4. Understand, review, discuss, select and apply new noninvasive diagnostic cardiovascular tests to identify CV disease early and select appropriate treatment.

5. Understand, review and discuss traditional, new and emerging CHD risk factors to prevent and treat CHD and CVD in clinical practice.

MODULE DESCRIPTION AND CONTENT

This module will start with basic teaching of vascular biology concepts and how this relates to vascular disease. This will include detailed information based on evidenced based research on vascular disease regarding endothelial dysfunction, arterial compliance, inflammation, oxidative stress, and autoimmune dysfunction of the arteries. The roles of cytokines, chemokines, inflammatory markers, oxidative defense, free radical oxidative stress, renin -angiotensin -aldosterone system, mechanism of hypertensive and lipid induced vascular damage will be reviewed.

Vascular aging pathophysiology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment will be discussed. The causes of vascular aging, use of telomere testing, noninvasive and invasive testing, early detection and treatment with nutrition, nutraceutical supplements, weight loss, exercise, pharmacologic treatment and integrative care are reviewed in detail with emphasis on controlled clinical trials and evidenced based medicine in peer reviewed journals.

The role of nutrition, nutraceuticals, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, weight management, body composition analysis, resistance and aerobic exercise, stress reduction, proper sleep hygiene and drugs in the integrative management of hypertension and CVD will be based on well conducted animal and human studies from randomized controlled clinical trials and peer reviewed research and review articles.

Dyslipidemia will be defined based on new basic science and clinical research. Inflammation, oxidative stress, the role for expanded lipid profiles using LDL and HDL particle size and number are reviewed in the context of the pathophysiology of vascular damage. A new approach to address proper management of lipids and improvement in the overall approach based on the pathophysiology will give the student new insights to effectively reduce CVD. An integrative approach to treatment combining nutrition, life style changes, supplements and drugs to reduce CV events will be reviewed based on human clinical evidenced based studies and peer accepted review articles.

Proper analysis of CV risk factors and CV risk scoring will be taught using the COSEHC risk analysis methods. Noninvasive CV tests will be reviewed such as Carotid IMT and Carotid duplex, ABI, ankle brachial index, CAPWA, computerized arterial pulse wave analysis, electron beam tomography, MRI of heart, CT angiograms, brachial artery reactivity and others to identify early and begin aggressive treatment More details visit theis site….
